"April Showers bring May flowers"
This old English proverb suggests that the month of April is traditionally a rainy period with interludes of Spring sunshine, which gives way to May, when flowers will bloom as a consequence.
Thankfully, April has been kind to us thus far and the weather has been a treat for gardeners, daffodils have thrived and flowering trees started to bloom.
It is a rewarding month for those with indoor-sown seeds well into growth, plus it is time to start sowing outdoors (however, just watch out for those pesky frosts!)
Here are 5 key jobs The Royal Horticultural Society recommend to do this month:
- Keep weeds under control
- Tie in climbing and rambling roses
- Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seeds outdoors
- Feed hungry shrubs and roses
- Start to feed citrus plants
However, there are many other jobs to do about the garden too, here are a few suggestions:
- Top up bird baths and feeders to encourage birds into your garden
- Remove dirt from paths and paving before summer arrives
- Check compost bins to ensure the quality and quantity is sufficient
- Wipe down/paint or vanish any weathered tubs and pots
- Look out for signs of pests and diseases, early prevention is key
As William Shakespeare quoted "April hath put a spirit of youth in everything" - go outdoors if you can and embrace the opportunity to get some fresh air and be creative.
